Back from the ENT

We just got home and Austin's poor ears are worse than we thought :( He has both an inner and outer infection in both ears. The Dr. said that his ears are so swollen from the infections that they are almost completely shut. He can't even see the ear drum or the tubes. He did suction out most of the gunk, which ended up being mucus instead of wax.

He is now on a round of antibiotics and ear drops for the next week, along with Motrin and Tylenol for pain. We go back on the 30th in hopes that the Dr. will be able to see his ear drums and figure out what to do next. We are thinking the next step is to have the tubes removed.

On a brighter note the Motrin helped with his sleep last night. He was able to sleep peacefully from 9:30-1:45 and again from 3:45-7:00. He was up crying from 1:45-3:45, but those 2 stretches of sleep were nice.

Last night was one for the books!!

Austin asked to go to bed around 8:30, we we did his whole bedtime routine and put him down. Around 9:30 he starts screaming and crying, I go in to check on him and he is standing up but still sleeping. I thought his ears might have been bothering him since he had been picking at them all night. But he is covered in sweat and saying that he needs help getting out. So I can only assume that he was having a nightmare :'(

Well these "nightmares" continued every thirty mins, with him waking up screaming and crying. Nothing could calm him down. Finally around 1:30 Michael brought him into our room so he could sleep with us, hoping he would feel safer. Well Austin does not do well in our bed, he kicks, lays sideways and pretty much kicks us both out of bed. Around 2:30 Michael couldn't take it anymore and went to sleep on the couch.

Minutes later Michael comes into the bedroom looking for his shirt, shoes, etc. He told me that the water alarm was going off in the utility closet and he needed to check on it. Low and behold there is a leak in the ceiling dumping water into our closet. The floor is covered in water. Just what we need to be dealing with!!!

Around 3:00 Austin decides that he is going to climb out of our bed and go back to his room. So Michael heads back to our room to sleep. I get Austin all settled back into his bed and head to bed. Not 10 minutes later Austin is screaming and crying again. I decide to turn off the monitor and let sleep on the couch, so Michael can get some rest. I get Austin settled down again and lay down on the couch only to have Austin wake up again!

This went on every thirty minutes from 9:30 pm until 5:00 am. Needless to say I did not sleep at all. Finally at 5:00 he settled down enough to get some sleep, but was woken up again when Michael went outside around 6:45 to check on the closet.

So here Austin and I sit on the couch watching cartoons waiting for the HOA maintenance guy to get here to look at the leak. We are both running on about 2 hours of sleep. Nap time cannot come soon enough.

Week 22

Your Baby: Month 5

Watch what you say -- baby is now able to hear outside noise from down in the womb. Studies show that baby finds gentle music and your own voice most soothing. Nipples are starting to sprout, and that little face is fully formed. And, baby's starting to settle into sleep cycles, snoozing about 12 to 14 hours a day. It shouldn't be hard to figure out when -- just pay attention to those kicks as they start and stop.

Week 21

I want to first apologize for neglecting the blog the past few weeks. We left for Dallas 2 days after Christmas so I wasnt able to update the blog, than BOTH Michael and I got sick the last 2 days we were there. I am still terribly sick with bronchitis, going on a week now :( I have another Dr. appt today so hopefully I can get another round of antibiotics and start feeling better soon. Now on to the weekly update.

Your Baby: Week 21

Baby gulps down several ounces of amniotic fluid every day, both for hydration and nutrition and to practice swallowing and digesting. And, these days, those taste buds actually work! Studies show that after birth, babies are most interested in tastes they've already experienced through amniotic fluid. Meaning, think about what you want your future child to eat as you prepare your own lunch.

Week 19

Your Baby: Week 19

Vernix caseosa, a greasy white substance made of lanugo, oil and dead skin cells (yum) now coats baby's skin, shielding it from the amniotic fluid. (Picture yourself after a nine-month bath, and the need for protection makes sense.) You might actually get to see the vernix at birth, especially if baby is premature.
